John White Alexander
Born Allegheny, Pennsylvania, October 7, 1856. Died New York, New York, May 31, 1915.
John White Alexander was born in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, in 1856. His parents died while he was still a baby, leaving him an orphan. His Grandparents took over the job of raising him.
At the age of twelve John began working as a telegraph boy in Pittsburgh. One of John’s employers recognized his artistic talent and assisted him in developing it. At the age of eighteen he began work a as an illustrator and cartoonist for Harper’s Weekly. After three years he traveled to
Europe and began his formal art education.
In 1881 he returned to the United State where he became well known for his portraits. He had a very successful artistic career while he was still alive. Something that a lot of artists don’t ever achieve.
He died in 1915 in New York.
